As a continue to grow older I encounter more challenging experiences. This one was deciding whether or not to buy a house with my long term boyfriend.
We had many debates of who puts down what and who's name gets placed on the deed. Another major question came up.
Are we getting married, or what?
In my opinion this question should be settled first before getting into any major financial investment.
The reason I say to settle this question first is because the couple should have a clear understanding of the situation going forward.
If you are the one with doubts about the relationship, then you should be the one to voice your concerns.
After discussing the "should we get married" question, other topics of discussion should include but not limited to:
- finances (this includes who's paying what towards down payment, who's paying what for mortgage, taxes, home insurance, utilities and monthly household expenses)
- property deed
- damages
- improvements
- etc
All topics should we be discussed especially in the beginning stages of purchasing your first home together.
Don't be afraid to voice your concerns!
Who knows? He may say, "With this house I thee wed."
